The mobile buffer zone

Presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2006

Three historical gates connect the old and the new city through the moat (historical buffer zone). Two of these Gates transform to transgress the green line (contemporary buffer zone). The first gate signifies how the north part built itself around walls to ignore the adjacent space. the second gate represents the attempt of the south part to maintain a link with the buffer zone and beyond. A third mobile unit connects north and south by moving between the two contemporary gates. its movement violates the nominal experience of space on each side and creates a mobile buffer zone which designates the emergence of a new shared space.
